Looking to bounce back after 2 rough weekends, the Bears came out flying in the first period playing a very discipline and structure forechecking system. Despite their efforts it was the North Stars that caught the first break of the game with Daniel Spina being sent to the box for slashing.
Boasting one of the league best powerplay units the North Stars converted on the man advantage with Brian Bales scoring on a backhand short side on Bears goalie Sheldon Baerg.
Already down 1-0 the Bears found themselves down once again with Brett Nelson-Bond sent to the box for boarding only 3 minutes after the North Stars first goal. Although being down a man, the Bears managed to capitalise shorthand with Michael Schlamp burying a rebound after a 2 on 1 rush with Adrian Esposito to level the score at 1 all.
With the first period winding down, the Bears took the lead with Tony Demelinne undressing the North Stars defence to bury the backhand on Matt Ezzy, putting the Bears in front 2-1 right before the horn sounded to end the first period.
The second period saw both team play and back and forth style of hockey with the North Stars scoring the only goal of the period.
With the scored tied 2 all at the start of the third period, Vlad Rubes put the Bears in front 3-2 jamming a loose puck into the empty net only 40 seconds into the period.
The North Stars came right back to level the score at 3 all and scored another goal on the next shift to take the lead 4-3. Bench coach Steve Austin called a time out after the 4 goal to settle the troops for the final 8 minutes of the game.
Only 5 minutes to go in the game, North Stars defence man Matt Price was sent to the box with a double minor for high sticking. The Bears wasted no time to level the score with Kurtis Dulle swooping in from the point on the powerplay to slide the puck under a sprawled out Matt Ezzy.
Heading to a shootout for the 3rd time this season the Bears needed a win to help them climb back up the ladder. Dutch sniper Tony Demelinne scored the only goal of the shootout betting Matt Ezzy on a beautiful deke to clinch the win for the Bears. Bears goalie Sheldon Baerg also out duelled Matt Ezzy stopping all 3 North Star shooters securing the extra point in the shootout for the Bears.
The 2 points brings the Bears within 2 points of 7th position on the AIHL ladder current held by the Canberra Knights.
