Sydney Bears Development Camps

2 seconds away from finishing

After going down to the Adrenaline on Saturday night 6-3 in Adelaide, the Bears wanted to get off to a good start against the defending AIHL champions.

The Bears quickly found themselves down a man with Michael Schlamp going to the box for hooking only 1:30 minutes into the game. Despite being down a man already goaltender Sheldon Baerg was called for delay of game after knocking the net off its moorings sending the Ice to a 5-3 powerplay. The Bears managed to kill off the 2 penalties and got their chance on the powerplay. Tony Demelinne wasted not time and blasted a wrist over the glove of Ice netminder Stu Denman to put the Bears in front 1-0.

With the 1st period winding down Kevin Darcy found himself in the box with a 2 and 10 for crosschecking from behind sending the Bears to their second powerplay of the period. Kurtis Dulle found the back of the net after Vlad Rubes threaded a pass through a crowded goalmouth.

Starting the 2nd period up 2-0 the Bears started to take control of the game with a defensive neutral zone style of play forcing to the Ice to fire pucks on net from out wide. The Ice managed to pull within 1 after Jason Baclig streaked in on a 2-1 rush when the Bears were caught on a bad line change.

Michael Schlamp found himself in the box with a 10-minute misconduct at the start of the 3rd period putting the Bears down another forward for the final 15 minutes. The Ice continued to apply pressure and finally managed to crack the Bears defence with only 1:52 to go in the game.

Despite their best efforts the Bears were unable to hold onto the game with the Ice scoring only 2 seconds to eventually take the game 3-2.

"Despite the loss we were leading the game for 58 minutes, something most teams in the league struggle to do against the Ice in Melbourne." said Bears Assistant Captain, Brett Nelson-Bond.

The Habitat Furniture 3 Stars of the Game went to:

  1. Tony Demelinne
  2. Kurtis Dulle
  3. Geoff O’Hara

The Bears next game is against the Blue Tongues this Sunday night at the Penrith Ice Palace, puck drops at 5:00pm.
