Bears tame Mustangs for 3rd win

In a gritty performance the Bears pushed their visitors the Mustangs to overtime on Sunday night where they held onto a 4 to 3 shootout victory.

Bears Captain Michael Schlamp was impressed by the progress made by the team so far, “All our guys are doing the little things right by playing their lines, which is allowing our key players to make the key plays.

“It was a long game for us having had the bye last week.”

There was a lot of action up and down the ice, with both teams desperately pushing to get ahead, but the Bears took first blood with Jim Zvonicek breaking through The Mustang defence and passing to Joel McFadden, firing a wrist shot just under the Mustangs netminder to open the scoring. The Mustangs weren’t done however and fought back to equalise with Andrew Belic scoring to equalise the score shortly after on the powerplay.

Offence was proving difficult for both teams, in the second period the teams took advantage of several player opportunities. Andrew Belic once again came through for The Mustangs tipping a shot between Sheldon Baerg legs to put the Mustangs infront, but it didn’t take long for the Bears to once again equalise after Tony Demelinne rifled a shot top shelf.

The scores remained mostly unchanged despite the Bears spending the vast majority of the 3rd period in the Mustang zone. Mustangs Scott Levitt turned on the attack on put the Mustangs in front with only 6 minutes to go however, Vlad Rubes managed to equalise the score one again forcing a sudden death shootout.

The shootout was shortlived with Bears import Tony Demelinne scoring low block side to seal the deal for the Bears and Sheldon Baerg stopped all 3 shooters for his 2nd shootout win in a row.

The Habitat Furniture 3 Stars of the Game went to:

  1. Joel McFadden
  2. Tony Demelinne
  3. Jim Zvonicek
The Bears next game at the Penrith Ice Palace will be on the 3rd of July taking on the Gold Coast Blue Tongues starting at 5pm.
