Bears coach Vlad Rubes returned to the line-up and was delighted with the win in the last home game of the season.
“It’s a great feeling, one we haven’t had for three years. It was great too to score 11 goals. Everyone was involved, the whole team was scoring goals, not just one line.”
The Bears scored two goals in the first period to Nick Cleland and Vlad Stransky. Cleland scored four-on-four off a long shot, deflecting off the keepers glove into the back of the net. Stransky scored after stripping the puck from a Canberra defense man in the neutral zone before scoring on the breakaway.
In the second period the Bears exploded, scoring five goals to five separate players and only allowing four shots on net.
Vlad Rubes scored after taking a rebound in front and scoring over a stretched out Ryan Lowe. Man of the match Michal Lauko scored the first of four goals after a beautiful give and go play in the corner with line mate Vlad Rubes.
After a peppering of shots at goal Brett Nelson-Bond scored from close-range after a long shot from the point was left alone in front. Adrian Esposito scored just eleven seconds later on a two-on one opportunity with veteran Paul Shumak making the perfect saucer pass right on the tape for the easy tap in goal.
Stransky continued the scoring after deflecting a shot into the net for the fourth goal in less than four minutes.
Within two minutes of the third period Eric Begin continued the goal rush by snapping a shot low blocker side after Scott Townsend drove wide on a 3 on 2 rush. The last three goals of the game were goals two, three and four for Michal Lauko, the first taking the puck from behind the Bears goal, and past three Canberra players to score from the slot.
Lauko scoring twice from cross ice passes to cap off a great night for the Bears who now head off on their final road trip of the year before competing in the finals on the weekend of the 28th & 29th in Melbourne.
The Bears would like to thank all their loyal fans for coming out to the final home game of the year.
