Bears get their revenge with 2-1 win

The Bears were out for revenge against the Adrenaline after their last match in Adelaide over a month ago. The game started out as expected with both teams firing on all cylinders and punishing each other with crushing body checks at either ends of the ice.

The Adrenaline controlled the first 5 minutes of the period until a double minor high sticking call was handed out to Adrenaline forward Wehebe Darge. The call was made after the stick of Darge clipped forward Vlad Rubes in the forehead opening up a deep cut on above is right eye.

The Bears were unable convert on the 4 minute penalty with Valda Pelikovsky coming only inches away after ringing a slap shot off the cross bar. Back at full strength, the Adrenaline went back on the attack, but Bears net minder Nick Boucher stood tall again closing the door on numerous scoring chances in tight. Just before the end of the first period the Adrenaline took their second high sticking penalty of the game giving the Bears a power play at the start of the second period.

Starting on the power play the Bears wasted no time getting on the score board, thanks to a beautiful deflection by Robert Franchini in front off the initial Murray Wand slap shot from the point. Having taken the lead 1-0 the Bears started to carry the momentum until an interference was called against Nick Cleland. James Keane scored off a great passing play in front leveling the score at 1 each.

With both teams deadlocked at 1 all for the most of the second period, it took another power play opportunity for the Bears to regain the lead. Eric Begin blasted a slap shot from the point past Adrenaline's goalie Oliver Martin to put the Bears back in front 2-1.

With only one period to go the Adrenaline picked up their physical play, dumping the puck deep on the Bears defensemen. The Adrenaline had their opportunity to tie the game with another high sticking call being handed out to Murray Wand with only 6 minutes to play.  The Bears were able to weather the storm and hold on for the 2-1 win and extend their unbeaten streak to 5 games.

The Adrenaline out shot the Bears 29 to 20, but the superb performance in net by Nick Boucher was the difference in the game. Nick changed the momentum of the game by successfully stopping 2 short handed breakaway attempts in the second period.

"Fantastic win over the Adelaide team.  Nick Boucher was outstanding in the net and that's pretty much what we are expecting from him."

"We battled hard showing lots of character and determination to succeed in this game. It's pretty satisfying to see where we are in the standings halfway through the season."

"We did train very hard for the past month and the players accepted the fact that we have to get out of the comfort zone at the training to do well in the games. We have a strong core of the team and younger players are stepping up. To name couple, Danny Shaw had an excellent month and Scott Townsend did well especially in the games against Newcastle and Gold Coast."

"This week we will have an easier session as we need a bit of rest and to heal some injuries and we also don't play this weekend. Next week we are back to business and getting ready for the strong Melbourne team on Sunday. Also it's great to see that we are getting more fans on stands week after week." said Coach Rubes on win over the Adrenaline.

With the win the Bears have now successfully beaten every team in regulation time this season and sit well out in front on the AIHL ladder with 23 points.

The Habitat Furniture Man of the Match was forward Vlad Rubes. Vlad didn't miss a shift all game even after receiving 6 stitches above the eye after being high sticked on the second shift of the game.

The Bears have their first weekend off for the season before doing battle with their closet rivals the Melbourne Ice on Sunday June 20th at the Penrith Ice Palace.
